TMJ Disorder
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a small joint located adjacent to the ear where the skull and lower jaw meet. This is a ball and socket joint that allows the lower jaw (mandible) to move and function with ease. TMJ Disorder, or TMD, occurs when this joint becomes damaged. TMD can often be mistaken for Myofacial Pain, or pain associated with the muscles of the face. Headaches, limited ability to open the mouth, generalized soreness along the side of the lower jaw can often be attributed to Myofacial Pain. Typical signs of TMD are popping or clicking of the jaw joint, ringing of the ear, and a jaw that does not open or close smoothly. An evaluation of your TMJ joint is performed as part of the new patient comprehensive evaluation or as needed for existing clients. If a problem is discovered, options for treatment or management will be discussed. The intent is to keep your TMJ healthy as this is one joint none of us can live without.
